As I considered applying my education into medicine, the combination of knowledge and
hands-on experience caught my eye. Being intrigued by healthcare and everything that goes on in emergency rooms, I decided to watch the videos showing how an anesthesiologist performs their duties. The recording provided an image of what I could become and what it takes to perform successfully in critical care anesthesiology.
Watching the recording helped me realize that it takes a lot of experience, skills, and
confidence to become an outstanding critical care anesthesiologist. The doctors performing anesthesia have to take control of every situation to ensure their patients feel comfortable and do not suffer from any side effects. As mentioned before, the patients are usually those who suffer from trauma or are in a severe condition following surgery or suffering from organ dysfunction.
Throughout the whole recording, the physician analyzes the condition of her patient and
responds accordingly. Another essential aspect of becoming a great critical care anesthesiologist that I understood while watching the video was the significance of collaboration with other health care professionals involved in the treatment of the patient. From the very start of the process, the
physician has to coordinate their efforts with those of surgeons, nurses, pharmacists, and
respiratory therapists. As explained by the doctor from the video, the ability to communicate is
crucial since he has to be ready to perform actions that require coordination with other
colleagues.
What is more, as stated by the physician in the recording, working as a critical care
anesthesiologist is not easy since you are responsible for the functioning of ventilation, blood
pressure management, placement of lines, and treatment of pain among other things. In addition,
it is the duty of the critical care anesthesiologist to keep an eye on their patients and react
immediately if anything wrong happens. With the majority of patients staying in intensive care
unable to explain their condition, it is necessary to conduct tests and pay attention to the results
obtained via imaging and other laboratory techniques.
Besides, working in such conditions is associated with the daily use of ultrasound and
other devices. Finally, as shown in the video, to become a professional critical care
anesthesiologist one needs a lot of patience and dedication. One has to study for four years in
college, then another four in medical school, do residency, and complete a fellowship program.
Another important thing in the career is that aspect of emotionality. As was mentioned
before, critical care anesthesiologists have to take care of patients who are literally dying, which
makes a huge amount of emotional effort. As the physician mentioned in the video, it would be
very difficult and frightening for the families of such patients to visit them because they would
experience strong feelings, and you need to know how to communicate with them. The role of
the physician in that situation is to explain the complicated medical terms in an accessible way
without losing any of your compassion and willingness to help the family members. Thus, the
career has an additional task – earning the trust of the patients and their relatives.
In addition, the unpredictability of the situation should be underlined as well. As soon as
a patient's condition deteriorates, critical care anesthesiologists should react quickly and make
the right decisions immediately. What is interesting about it, however, is that the specialists
should demonstrate great problem-solving skills in order to save a patient's life. Moreover,
considering that working hours in such clinics usually include long work shifts, sometimes even
nights, the profession is quite challenging. Nonetheless, as some professionals stated, it is
extremely rewarding since one works directly in the survival of the patient.
Overall, having analyzed that video, I learned a lot about what it means to be a critical
care anesthesiologist. Now, I am absolutely sure that my decision to become a healthcare
specialist was not accidental , but it is a very serious step in one's life. One needs to be smart,
work together with a team and undergo several years of education to gain the knowledge
required for that profession. However, in spite of this, one still gets an amazing opportunity to
help patients survive and recover
